For a Friend
Written (1999) for a friend, who after many years of alcohol and drug abuse
allowed herself to be found by Jesus .... but the battle isn't over yet!
You followed the life of the glitzy facade,
But beneath all the sparkle the living was bad.
You swirled down your rivers of colourful dreams
And didn't see through your archenemy's schemes.
Four times you almost didn't return,
But the Lord knew your heart that you wanted to learn
How to live your life clean and useful and true,
And to turn from your old life unto a new.
Then you joined a band all battered and sore
And with them reached out to Jesus for more.
As the Baptismal waters closed over your head
God rendered the old things forgotten and dead
Through the blood of Jesus His wonderful Son
The deed was accomplished, the victory won.
You started your journey of the straight narrow way,
But it isn't as easy as most Christians say.
Now you walk in the light and you serve a new Master;
The lion roars louder, his arrows fly faster.
The road is so tricky, you feel so much pain,
Now it's time to turn to your Shepherd again!
He has come to find you in your pit of despair;
Though you did not know it : He always was there.
Just reach out and touch Him, your lover and friend,
For He'll keep you safe in the palm of His hand.
